The Carrier Mod Adds new gameplay to the stock version of Armada 2. The beta comes with a Federation Carrier/Battlecruiser (the Eagle class) and a Klingon Carrier (the C8V). The Carriers automatically launch fighters when enemies are in range, aloowing for the carrier to choose a different target from the fighters, or to simply run away, essentially creating a new 'Hit-And-Run' tactic. The disadvantage of carriers is their vulnerability without fighters. the Eagle can still stand up to a fair amount of punishment and can face down most cruisers, but the C8V is very weak on it's own, and extremely vulnerable if it's fighter wings are drawn off. However, the C8V will also launch Ace pilots (with increased weapons damage), randomly inserted into their flights. The computer WILL use these carriers, and ruthlessly, too, sometimes, so watch out!

The mod package also includes basic instructions for adding carriers like these to your personal mods, and an example 'launch fighters' ODF.

Future releases will include more races (Romulans and 8472 are next on the list), more carrier types, and special anti-fighter ships for combatting these new threats.

INTRODUCTION :

for years, the A2 modding community has fought it's battles with carriers which used

the cardassian drone weapon as fighters, or built fighters like a shipyard (forcing us

to keep close tabs on those carriers, and creating the odd ability of fighters to go on

extra-long range missions from carriers at random.). with the advent of the 1.2.5 patch,

we were given the chance to create carriers which could launch fighters in waves, and

could operate on their own. few have yet truly taken advantage of this, but now, the A2

Carrier Project promises a new style of play.


MISSION/FEATURES :

The eventual goal of the project is to give all races carriers OR anti-fighter vessels

(I just don't see the borg using carriers...). In addition, this project hopes to replace

some weapons graphics (including the ugly stock fed pulse), and generally add more dynamics

to stock gameplay. One key feature of the project is the loss of need ot keep constant tabs

on your carriers, they will now automatically launch fighters when within range, and their

special energy will denote when the next wave will launch. also, your fighters are now

commandable, allowing for interesting fleet tactics, including hit-and-run attacks, in

which a carrier group enters enemy territory, launches it's fighters, then retreats to a

safe distance, while the fighters deal their damage.


INSTALLATION :

simply copy and paste the contents of the 'Mod' folder into your Armada 2 folder.

NOTE : you MUST have the 1.2.5 patch and A2 Physics Project X installed. this mod

will work with other mods, but you must install much of it manually to do this.


INCLUDED :

Federation and Klingon Carriers for the game, as well as a copy of the first 'fighter

launch' special weapon odf i created, for those who wish to include this in their mods.

The next installment will hopefully include rmulans (i need to work out permissions still)

and species 8472 (they never get new stuff, so it's time they get something)


KNOWN ISSUES :

the mod has been known to crash the game when going to the admiral's log after a game.

i don't know why yet, but i'm working on it!


RELEASE NOTES :

Please feel free to use the Carrier Project in any of your mods, just ask permission from

the appropriate people if you use any of their material, and please include me in the

credits if you use any of the Fighter Launch weapon odfs.

The admiral's log crashing is something I've experienced with several of my own projects and it seems to have something to with the depressed button bitmaps in mine I still haven't figures it out but it might be something to look at. I'll definately be giving this a look!

I like this! A lot! I always like something where someone creates a mod by thinking outside the box. Even better when they share these with us. An intrguing mod which I will be D/Ling and checking out.
